4.9.1. Whelk (question 67)

Answer IPA Informants
buckie   I, II, III, V, VII, VIII, IX, XI, XII, XIII, XIV
slavery buckie   XV, XVI
wulk X

Informant VI could not answer this question. Buckie is the general Scottish name for StE whelk (cf. SND). The answer slavery buckie is an allusion to the slimy nature of the whelk. Wulk was not only given by informant X but was applied several times to the periwinkle, a mollusc which looks similar to the whelk. Periwinkles are smaller than whelks, however.
