Most of the fishermen used the name codling
for any cod which was not full-grown. A distinction between sprag (a half-sized cod) and codling
(a very tiny cod) was only made by informants I, II, III, VI. Informant XII
called a very tiny cod "pout or fry"
and used sprag as another name for cod.
Pout is a name applied to various
kinds of fish (OED). SND
lists it as a name applied to any small or young creature. Fry
also is a collective term for the smaller kinds of fish and young fishes (OED).
A half-sized cod was called blockie by
informant VIII.
SND lists block
as being used for cod in Banffshire. Blockie
is given as the name for a half-sized cod on the east coast of Scotland in GNF.
