4.1.13. Skids (question 19)

Answer IPA Informants
cradle   II, III, VI, IX
rollers   IV, V, VII, XI, XIII, XVI
trailer VIII, XII, XIV
skids XV

Informant VIII gave trailer and skids as an answer. Trailer was the word he applied to smaller boats (as did informant XII) and skids to the device put under the boat when it is launched for the first time. I have no answer from informants I and X.

Whereas smaller boats can be put on trailers to take them to sea or as soon as they come ashore to beach them, larger vessels are still put on round wooden sticks or timbers (rollers, skids) before launching and beaching. Usually the boats are in the harbour all year round and are only beached when they have to be painted or repaired. West Haven was the only place where the boats had to be launched and beached with each trip. Cradle seems to have the same function as a trailer.
