4.1. The Boat

The following questions are all concerned with the terminology used for different parts of a small rowing-boat. Questions 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, 16, 45 are omitted as they did not yield results worth presenting.

4.1.1. Gunwale (question 6)

Answer IPA Informants
gunnel    II, III, IV, V, VIII, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV
gunnels    I, VII, XVI
rail    VI
top rail   IX

Informant IX had two words at his disposal: "The top rail or the gunnel." Whereas he did not make it clear in which context he would use either word, the informant from Port Seton (VI) was keen to point out the local use of rail: "we just say the rail but it's actually the gunwale".[1]

[1]              It could often be observed that many informants had at least two words at their disposal for the same thing. In these cases, the first answer is listed if the informant did not otherwise indicate the local usage of one of his answers (cf. chapter 2.1).
