Informant IX had two words at his disposal: "The top rail or the gunnel." Whereas he did not make it clear in which context he would use either word, the informant from Port Seton (VI) was keen to point out the local use of rail: "we just say the rail but it's actually the gunwale".[1] [1]
It could often be observed that many informants had at least two
words at their disposal for the same thing. In these cases, the first answer
is listed if the informant did not otherwise indicate the local usage of one
of his answers (cf. chapter 2.1). |
